Thousands of desperate Makhanda residents were fuming and helpless as they entered their ninth day without water on Thursday.

Taps ran dry on February 17 with a catastrophic failure at Makana municipality’s major pumping station at the James Kleynhans water treatment works (JKWTW) at Botha’s Hill some 15km north-east of the small city.
